Tadashi Takayanagi is a professor at Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics (YITP), Kyoto University. He explores how string theory microscopically describes gravity and spacetime in a quantum mechanical way, using the recent innovative idea, called holographic principle. In 2006, when he was a post-doc fellow in University of California, Santa Barbara, he found a formula which offers a holographic description of entanglement entropy. This discovery implies that a spacetime in gravity can be regarded as a collection of quantum bits of information. This work was recognized as the 2015 New Horizons in Physics Prizes from the Breakthrough Prize Foundation.
