After graduating from the Department of Archaeology in the Division of History, Faculty of Letters, The University of Tokyo, Abe went on to complete the Master’s course in archaeology in the Division of General Culture, Graduate School of Humanities and Sociology at the same university in 2001. In 2008, he completed the Ph.D. program at the University of Liverpool in the U.K. He has served as Visiting Researcher of the National Research Institute for Cultural Properties, Tokyo (2008–2009), Associate Fellow of the same Institute (2009–2014), Project Researcher at the University Museum of The University of Tokyo (2014–2015), and Visiting Associate Professor of the Center for Cultural Research Studies, Kanazawa University (2014–2015). Since 2015, he has been in his current appointment as Assistant Professor at the Waseda Institute for Advanced Study.
