Marco Antonio Zago
Marco Antonio Zago is president of the University of São Paulo (USP) since January 2014 and full professor at USP’s Ribeirão Preto Medical School (FMRP) since 1990. He graduated in Medicine from the FMRP and earned his master’s and Ph.D. in Clinical Medicine from the same school. He did postdoctoral research at the Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine at University of Oxford (United Kingdom). Since 2001, he is director of the Cell Therapy Center (CTC) in Ribeirão Preto, a Center for Research, Innovation and Dissemination (CEPID) supported by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP). Zago’s main research interests focus on hereditary anemiae, the molecular bases of neoplasias, and adult stem cells – in particular, hematopoietic and mesenchymal stem cells. He supervised 23 doctoral, four master and five postdoctoral students. He took part in the sequencing project of the Xylella fastidiosa genome, the first phytopathogen to have its genome fully sequenced, and in the Cancer Genome Project, both undertaken by FAPESP. Zago is member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) and a corresponding member of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), based in Italy. He was president of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) (2007-2010), dean of research at USP (2010-2013), clinical director of the Hospital of Ribeirão Preto and member of the National Biosafety Commission (CTNBio). Together with Roberto Passetto Falcão and Ricardo Pasquini, he edited Hematologia: fundamentos e prática (2001), a textbook widely used for teaching health professionals. He is recipient of the President’s Grand Cross and the President’s Commendation of the National Order of Scientific Merit, as well as of the São Paulo Medal of Scientific Merit, awarded by the São Paulo state government. |
